I was so sad to hear this news last night – Frank McCourt was one of my favorite authors and a wonderful presence in the literary world. He had such a warm and affable manner in the television interviews I saw and he had the gift of finding humor in the most unlikely places. Reading “Angela’s Ashes” for the first time was an unforgettable experience – I have never been so simultaneously tempted to cry and laugh. It’s a beautifully woven story and McCourt’s personality darts through the pages with such wit and feeling that I feel, perhaps somewhat audaciously, that I’ve known him, even for a brief while. That part of himself, that shared depth and emotion, was an inimitable gift he gave to his readers. I will miss him dearly, as I’m sure will his millions of other readers and admirers.
