Getting involved in Greenwich

I’ve changed the way Spanish translations will be done on this blog.  Until now, I wrote my posts, emailed them to one of my translators, and waited for the translation to come back before posting so I could get the English and Spanish up at the same time.

My translators, I make it sound like I had some special squadron assembled, were two of my colleagues at work who generously volunteered to do it for me.  It took them quite some time because I asked that they not just do a word-for-word translation, but that they edit phrases that don’t translate well into Spanish, like “Oh my!” which they translated to “Dios Mio,” because oh my has no similar meaning in Spanish.  Their worrying about finding an appropriate phrase meant it took them longer to translate than it took me to write my posts.

While I am grateful for their attention to detail, it delayed the posts and kept me from writing as frequently as I would have liked.  So with regret I’ve decided to post in English first, and add Spanish later.  Probably within a day or two.  I’ve also outsourced translation to Stephanie Alberto, who attends Universidad Iberoamericana in the Dominican Republic.  She’ll be doing the translations in her spare time.  I met her once; her sister works with me and is one of the original translators.

I’m not happy about posting first in English and adding Spanish later; however, I have no illusions about hundreds of disappointed Spanish-speaking readers not having the translations right away.  But there is principal involved, and I can only say I hope to do better when I can.  My other option was to use one of the online free translation websites, but those are terrible and would be even more offensive.  I should mention that I’m looking for a suitable Greenwich High School kid from Byram or Chickahominy to do the translation, and I am offering a small monthly stipend.  Until then, I’m really grateful that Stephanie agreed to help me out.

Thanks to Elizabeth Alberto and Hugo Chavez for their help with getting the blog started.  Sorry I had to outsource your jobs to DR but it’s not as if I did it to save money – I’m paying a stipend now, and you guys did it as volunteers.  Hugo was the translator at the BNA’s Candidate Forum on October 1^st.  And he said he’d help out again if we need him.

He cambiado la manera en la que se harán las traducciones en español en este blog. Hasta ahora, escribía mis publicaciones, las enviaba por correo electrónico a uno de mis traductores, y esperaba por la traducción para poder publicarla. Así, podía subir la publicación en inglés y español al mismo tiempo.

Mis traductores, lo hago sonar como si tuviera algún tipo de escuadrón organizado, eran dos colegas del trabajo, quienes generosamente se ofrecieron para hacerlo. Les tomaba algo de tiempo porque les pedía que no solo hicieran una traducción palabra por palabra, sino que editaran las frases que no se tradujeran apropiadamente al español, como “Oh my!” que traducían a “Dios Mio”, porque “Oh my” no tiene un significado literal en español. Sus preocupaciones por encontrar una frase apropiada quería decir que iba a tomar más tiempo traducir que lo que me tomaba escribir las publicaciones.

Aunque estoy agradecido por sus atenciones a  los detalles, eso tardaba las publicaciones y me prohibía escribir tan frecuentemente como hubiese querido. Así que con arrepentimiento, he decidido publicar en inglés primero y agregar español después. Probablemente en uno o dos días. He externalizado las traducciones a Stephanie Alberto, quien estudia en la Universidad Iberoamericana en República Domnicana. Ella hará las traducciones en su tiempo libre. La conocí una vez; su hermana trabaja conmigo quien es una de las traductoras originales.

No estoy feliz por publicar en inglés y agregar la versión en español después; sin embargo, no tengo ilusiones de tener miles de lectores decepcionados por no tener las traducciones enseguida. Pero hay un principio involucrado, y es que solo espero hacer las cosas mejor cuando puedo. Mi otra opción era usar una página de internet con traducciones en línea gratis, pero esas son terribles y sería aún más ofensivo. Debo mencionar que busco a un candidato apropiado de Greenwich High School de Byram o Chickahominy para hacer las traducciones, y estoy ofreciendo un pequeño estipendio mensual. Mientras tanto, estoy muy agradecido que Stephanie haya aceptado ayudarme.

Dom., pero no es como si lo hubiese hecho para ahorrar dinero- estoy pagando un estipendio ahora, y ustedes eran voluntarios. Hugo fue el traductor en el Foro para el Candidato  de la BNA el 1ero de octubre. Dijo que ayudará de nuevo si lo necesitamos.
