I get annoyed every time I hear about the Merrit Parkway Conservancy and the imperative to maintain that road’s pristine beauty. In this article, Peter Malkin was featured arguing with D.O.T. officials over their cutting down trees. I remember when then Sen. Nickerson got funding for the big beautification project on the Merrit about 10 years ago.
In Greenwich, at least, almost no one’s house who lives along the Merrit is actually in viewing distance from it; houses in No. Greenwich are all set back from the Parkway. This is as opposed to Byram, and the rest of Greenwich for that matter, where I-95 cuts through densely populated neighborhoods where residents can look out their windows for a traffic report.
In Byram, we’re fighting (and losing the fight) to get trees cut down along I-95. Here’s a picture I took in 2006. The tree is still standing today.
It would be nice if someone paid some attention to what we have to put up with along I-95. This photo was taken behind my house and I can attest that no one from D.O.T. has done any cleanup of the area since I moved there in 1996. I think all resources for sprucing-up the Merrit need to be diverted to I-95 until it at least looks like something other than an abandoned field. I should note that the trees they want to cut now are being cut for safety reasons, and I’m in favor of that.

Me enojo cada vez que escucho sobre la autovía Merrit Conservancy y lo imperativo de mantener la belleza prístina de la calle. En este artículo, Peter Malkin fe mostrado discutiendo con oficiales del Departamento de Transporte (D.O.T. por sus siglas en inglés) sobre la tala de árboles. Recuerdo cuando el entonces Senador Nickerson obtuvo financiamento para el gran embellevimiento del Merrit hace algunos 10 años.
En Greenwich, por lo menos, casi ninguna casa de aquellos que viven por el Merrit está realmente a alguna distancia de verlo; casa en el Norte de Greenwich está todas retrocedidas de la Autovía. Esto es tan opuesto a Byram, y el resto de Greenwich para el caso, donde la I-95 atraviesa por los populados vecindarios donde los residentes puede mirar por sus ventanas para un reporte del tránsito.
En Byram estamos luchando (y perdiendo la lucha) por talar árboles que bordean la I-95. Aquí va una fotogrfía que tomé en el 2006. El árbol aún está alló hoy, sea agradable si alguien le presta algo de atención a lo que hemos tenido que aguantar por la I-95. Esta foto fue tomada detrás de mi casa y puedo atestiguar que nadie de la D.O.T. ha limpiado el área desde que me mudé allí en 1996. Creo que todos los qe quieren arreglar el Merrit necesitan ser desviados de la I-95 hasta que ésta por lo menos parezca otra cosa que no sea un campo abandonado. Debo apuntar que los árboles que ellos quieren cortar ahora ahora serán talados por razones de seguridad y estoy a favor de ello.
