Getting involved in Greenwich

I didn’t post anything all last week.  One of my childhood friends from Riverside, Alison Jacob, called me and told me her older brother Rob was in a motorcycle accident.  I picked her up at the airport on Tuesday and we went up to join Rob’s wife at Norwalk Hospital.  Rob was in a coma, he died on Saturday. I spent most of the week with his sisters Alison and Shelby, his mother and his wife Pam.  It was awful as you can probably imagine, ending badly.

I’m posting this in English only because I don’t have time to get the translation done.  It will come later.

I’ve had it with motorcycles.  Rob wasn’t wearing a helmet but likely wouldn’t have made it if he was so while I think anyone who rides a bike without one is really crazy, that’s not the point here.   I’m sick of motorcycle riders period.

I don’t think anyone with a wife, a sister, a brother, a mother or close friends should ride a motorcycle.  Period.  It is an extremely selfish act.  Rob left us, really, at the accident scene.  His problems and sorrows were over.  His wife, sisters, mother and friends were left to suffer.  I was there for all that, and saw it first hand as they went through the stages with the doctors, and had to make that final decision to remove his life support.  No one should have to choose that.

So to all you tough guy motorcycle riders, let me ask you something.  If some guy was hassling your wife and said something to her that upset her, what would you do?  Deck him probably.  Well if you’re so concerned about her, why would you risk putting her through a hell that’s 100 times worse?  Because you’re a selfish moron is the only answer I have.  I don’t care how much you enjoy your motorcycle.  It’s not just about you.  Because you’re a really safe rider?  Well the New Canaan Police verified that the other driver was completely at fault, but he’s alive.  He was in a SUV.

Stop riding your motorcycle if you care about anyone in your life.  You’re just a jerk if you don’t.

Why does it cost $75 for a replacement beach card when the original is only $27?  I asked around and the consensus was that it discouraged people getting a duplicate beach card for their friends.  I must admit that growing up it was not unusual for us to get a duplicate beach card so our out-of-town friends could come to the beach.  That was when a beach card was $5 and the duplicate was $2 (Later $20 and $5). Children’s replacement beach passes are $25, the original is only $5.

This is just more of the beach access insanity that has taken over in Greenwich ever since the lawsuits.  See my post about catching beach card lenders here.  Some of what goes on is because of the lawsuits but making a duplicate $75 to discourage cheats who might get one for a friend – insane.  You don’t punish everyone just to discourage a few cheats UNLESS IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT – LIKE CHECKING FOR WEAPONS AT THE AIRPORT!  Who really cares if someone gets a beach card they shouldn’t have?

There’s good news on this one.  I spoke to Tom Greco in Parks & Rec. and he’s pushing to get the fee lowered to something reasonable because now, if you lose your card, it will be cancelled so there’s no risk of an extra beach card getting loose.

We need to give the person who sits around thinking of ways to tighten beach access something else to do, it’s not very productive.

And by the way, you can’t find the replacement cost on the Park Pass Fee Schedule.  You can only find it on the Tennis page.

Reemplazo de Tarjetas de Playa $ 75

¿Por qué el reemplazo de una tarjeta de playa cuesta $75 cuando el original sólo cuesta $27? Pregunté por ahí y el consenso fue que desanima a la gente de obtener un duplicado de tarjeta de playa para sus amigos. Debo admitir que cuando era pequeño no era raro obtener un duplicado para que nuestras amistades de fuera de la ciudad pudiesen llegar a la playa. En aquel entonces una tarjeta de playa costaba $5 y el duplicado $2 (después $20 y $5, respectivamente.)  Las tarjetas de reemplazo para niños aumentaron a $25, cuando el original tan sólo era $5.

Esto es otro ejemplo más de la locura que rodea el acceso a la playa que se ha apoderado de Greenwich desde que comenzaron las demandas. Vea mi poste sobre la captura de personas que piden prestadas las tarjetas de playa aquí. Parte de la razón de lo que está sucediendo es por las demandas, pero incrementando un duplicado a $75 para desalentar tramposos que podrían conseguir duplicados para un amigo – eso es insólito. No se debe castigar a todo el mundo sólo para desanimar a los pocos tramposos ¡A MENOS QUÉ SEA REALMENTE IMPORTANTE – COMO CONTROL DE ARMAS EN EL AEROPUERTO! ¿A quién le importa si alguien recibe una tarjeta de playa que no debería tener?

Hay buenas noticias en este caso. Hablé con Tom Greco de Parks & Recration y él está luchando para disminuir la tarifa a algo razonable, porque ahora, si usted pierde su tarjeta, se cancelará  la tarjeta eliminando el riesgo de que su tarjeta no sea utilizada por una persona no autorizada.

Tenemos que darle algún oficio a la persona que se sienta a pensar en formas para reforzar acceso a la playa, esa persona no es muy productiva.

Y, por cierto, usted no puede encontrar el costo de reemplazo publicado en la lista de tarifas Park Pass Fee Schedule. Sólo se puede encontrar en la página de Tenis.

Don’t loan your daughter your beach card, it may be confiscated.  When the town announced the new beach card scanners they justified the expense by saying it would save money on reprinting beach cards every year, and fight counterfeit beach cards.  Overkill, maybe, but OK.  Lines caused by scanning delays were aptly addressed by Tom Greco, of Parks and Recreation, who said that if the lines get long they’ll waive people through “we’re not protecting Fort Knox.”  I served with Tom on the RTM and he’s a very reasonable man with a lot of common sense.  I have to say his approach to this, while it would seem obvious, was refreshing in light of the madness surrounding beach access generally.

A source told me that something else is going on, something the town didn’t tell us – they’re using the birth date you gave them with your application to catch the arch villain beach card lenders.  I spoke to a woman whose daughter borrowed her beach card.  The woman, 40ish, the daughter, 20ish.  The daughter was told at the gate that they knew it wasn’t her beach card and she needs to get her own because next time, they will take it.

GPD announces drunk driving roadblocks but this sting operation needed to be kept from the public?  What, it might warn the offenders and we’d miss the opportunity to catch them?  This is more important than other enforcement activities?  It was wrong not to tell us.  Well, now I’ve exposed it, so be forewarned.  If you look noticeably younger or older than the person whose beach card you borrow, you’ll be caught.

The beach access lawsuits have sucked a lot of the fun out of living in Greenwich.  I’ll review that in another post soon.

Operativo Encubierto sobre la Tarjeta de Acceso a la Playa

No le preste su tarjeta de playa a su hija, pues la misma puede ser confiscada. Cuando la ciudad anunció los nuevos dispositivos de lectura de tarjetas de playa, justificaron el costo diciendo que se ahorraría dinero en la reducción de reimpresión de tarjetas cada año, y combatiría la falsificación de las mismas. Es un exceso, quizás, pero está bien.

Las colas causadas por las demoras en las lecturas de las tarjetas fueron acertadamente dirigida por Tom Greco, de Parks and Recreation, quien dijo que si las filas se ponen largas dejará pasar a la gente “nosotros no estamos protegiendo la fortaleza Knox.” Fui miembro del RTM junto a Tom y él es un hombre muy razonable con mucho sentido común. Debo decir que su enfoque sobre esto, mientras que parecería obvio, es refrescante a pesar de la locura que generalmente rodea el acceso a la playa.

Una fuente me informó que algo más está sucediendo, algo que la ciudad no nos dijo – están utilizando la fecha de nacimiento que usted puso en la solicitud de la tarjeta para atrapar a los villanos. Hablé con una mujer cuya hija le pidió prestada su tarjeta de playa. La mujer, en sus 40s, y su hija, en sus 20s. En la entrada le dijeron a la hija que sabían que no era su tarjeta y ella necesita conseguir una tarjeta propia, sino la vez próxima se la incautarían.

El departamento policiaco de Greenwich (GPD) anuncia las redadas en las vías de tránsito para conductores embriagados pero ¿es necesario mantener esta operación policial escondida del público? ¿Porqué, advertiría a los delincuentes y nosotros perdiéramos la oportunidad de atraparlos? ¿Es esto más importante que las demás medidas policíacas? Fue incorrecto no decirnos. Bueno, ahora que lo he expuesto, considérese prevenido. Si usted aparenta notablemente más joven o más viejo que la edad del propietario la de tarjeta que usted tomó prestada, será atrapado.

Los pleitos por el acceso a la playa le han robado gran parte de la diversión de vivir en Greenwich. Pronto reseñaré este último punto en otro poste.

Progreso de la Construcción Church St. Parque

Aquí están algunas nuevas fotos de la construcción.  Hay más fotos aquí en mi poste de hace una semana.

This story brought back memories.  Seems some kids were jumping off the Mianus River bridge over I-95 and they scared motorists.  The police are after them.  When I was younger, and dumber, me and my friends used to jump off that bridge into the river, but we did it from a catwalk just under the bridge – and out of sight from motorists.  Seems that onlookers have got license plate numbers, so GPD is after this bunch.  I guess I’m lucky I grew up back in the day, when cops ignored such crimes.  Actually, they didn’t ignore us.  I do recall being balled out by the Greenwich Marine Police for jumping off not the I-95 bridge, but the nearby New Haven Railroad bridge that crossed the Mianus.  That was a much easier jump, about half the distance.

Brincadores de el Puente de Mianus: DIOS MIO!

Esta historia trajo detrás muchas memorias.  Parecen que algunos niños saltaron de el Puente Mianus sobre I-95 y asustaron a motoristas.  La policía los busca.  Cuando era más joven, y más tonto, yo y mis amigos también brincamos de el puente, pero hacíamos de un camino bajo el puente – fuera de vista de los motoristas.  Parece que los espectadores tienen números de matrícula, así que GPD sigue buscando este banda.  Pienso que fui afortunado haber crecído durante los días cuando la policía no le daban importancia ha tales crímenes.  Pero tampoco nos ignoraban.  Recuerdo que me regaño la Policía de Greenwich Marine por brincar no de el Puente de I-95, pero el Puente cerca de New Haven Railroad que cruza el Mianus.  Era un salto mucho más fácil, solamente mitad de la distancia.

The most colossal screw-up in town history, the Hamilton Ave. School renovation/upgrade project, may soon be the trail of the Greenwich century.  It shouldn’t be, I think there’s more significance to the North Mianus residents’ suit regarding their sewer assessments, but this situation has had more publicity.

The situation is ugly.  No doubt the delays in getting the school opened were caused by both parties.  The question is, how much are we going to spend fighting? 

It will be tempting to want to fight this just to show that the Town didn’t cause the hardships associated with the building delays.  Settling could say that it was our leaders’ fault.  Let’s hope we don’t see a protracted lawsuit just so our officials can save face. 

Taxpayers need to watch the handling of this closely.  There’s no emergency, the school is open, now our leaders have time to do the best thing for the town.  Let’s hope they do.  History doesn’t encourage me to expect Greenwich will avoid a lawsuit when it makes sense.

La Escuela de Hamilton Ave. – Valen las Demandas de Construccion

El error más grande en la historia de la ciudad, el proyecto de la renovimiento de la Escuela Hamilton Ave., podría resultar muy pronto como el rastro del siglo de Greenwich.  No debe ser.  Pienso que hay más importancia a la demanda por parte de los residentes de North Mianus con respecto a sus gravámenes de alcantarilla, pero esta otra situación le ha llegado más publicidad.

La situación esta fea.  No hay ninguna duda que los atrasos por abrir la escuela fueron causados por ambos lados.  ¿La pregunta es, cuánto tiempo iremos a pasar luchando?

Es de mucha tentacion querer luchar si no, para mostrar que la ciudad no causó las dificultades asociadas con los retardos de la escuela.  Un acuerdo podría servir como señal que este incidente fue causado por nuestros lideres.  Esperemos no ver un pleito prolongado para que nuestros lideres pueden salvarse la espalda.

Nosotros pagamos impuestos y necesitamos juzgar esta situación de cerca.  No hay emergencia, la escuela sigue abierta, pero ahora nuestros lideres tienen tiempo de hacer lo mejor para la ciudad.  Esperemos que sea haci.  Pero la historia de Greenwich no me anima esperar que Greenwich evitará un pleito legal cuando es mas lógico hacerlo.

Talk at Albert’s Barber Shop today was about someone being killed in Port Chester yesterday (Friday, August 28^th) and that causing traffic to back up in Byram for some time.

I called the desk sergeant at PCPD to ask about it.  They were not ready to make a public comment yet, but he did share that the person wasn’t killed but passed away and the circumstances are under investigation.

La charla en la peluqueria de Albert es que sucedio una muerte en Port Chester ayer (Viernes 28 de Agosto) y causa retardos de tráfico en Byram por algún tiempo.

Hable con el sargento en PCPD para hacer unas preguntas.  No estaban dispuestos para disimular commentario publicamente, pero si me dijo que la persona no fue matada, si no que murio y las circumstanzias siguen bajo investigacion.

Los bordillos delante el Parque Byram Shore los están reemplazando. El trabajo parece estar medio terminado. Me pregunto por que es necesario reemplazar estos bordillos en absoluto, especialmente cuando hay muchos mas aceras en Byram gravemente necesitando la reparación. Tengo una llamada adentro a DPW pidiendo informe, y fijaré la información cuando alguien me devuelva la llamada.
