Behind the wheel of vehicles of all types

Vintage racers — even more from Monterey motor week.

|

Most of the Monterey motor week, held each August on California’s Monterey Peninsula, is pretty static — from the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to the Concorso Italiano, the cars are just sitting there, looking pretty. Sprinkled about the Peninsula are at least six auctions and admittedly, the cars rolling across the auction block do break the static mold, but most of the time is spent just looking at parked cars.

But not at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, about 10 miles east of Monterey. From August 14 through August 17, dozens of classic race cars — Ferraris, Maseratis, Aston Martins, Jaguars, Porsches — tore around the 2.2-mile track during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

Here was a 1970 Ferrari 512M, there went a gaggle of older Porsches. And what about that 1957 Aston Martin DBR2? Have a look at this gallery of Sports Car Digest images by photographer Dennis Gray. They’re terrific pictures and they will certainly give you a better idea of it all than anything more I can say.
