Commuter Age

Covering transportation issues

About Martin Cassidy

Martin B. Cassidy has covered local and state news for the Stamford Advocate and Greenwich Time for the past decade. He lives in New Canaan.

In the process he has won numerous awards from the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists, including being runner-up for the organization¹s 2006 Stephen A. Collins Public Service Award.

He has covered the entire realm of local news including government, education, crime, courts, environment, and development, experience that hopefully makes him a decent moderator for a forum for Connecticut commuters.

After covering crime and courts at the Greenwich Time, he returned to the big city in late 2008 and was assigned the transportation beat (an unexpectedly large subject area that includes road projects big and small, train service, development, new technology, traffic snarls, parking problems, and federal government transit spending).

He hopes that commuters chime in about their issues and transit topics big and small; or barring that at least offer suggestions about the best place to find coffee in Grand Central Station.

  1. It’s Oren’s Daily Roast, which, last time I checked, was located near the entrance facing 42nd Street. Years ago, I used to grab a coffee au lait there every morning amid a crush of fatigued commuters.

  2. Nope, Oren’s is no longer there. It was replaced a few months ago with a French-themed pastry shop. I think the best place for coffee in GCT is Joe.

  3. The best coffee is from those crappy little coffee carts.

I commute from Bridgeport to GCT every day. Sometimes the ride is just perfectly fine, especially when there is a bar car on the way home. However, most times people just piss me off to no end. Take a look at the police blotter on the MTA for instance! It’s not just the train either. It’s driving, and walking too. They are everywhere!! How about when the train breaks down?? UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH!
