The New Canaan U12 Fury played the Shoreline Hammerheads in the first game of a Triple Crown Tournament in North Branford, CT. New Canaan won the game 9-4 after jumping out to a 9-0 lead.
Mikey Pelli pitched four scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Robby Jones was 2-for-2 with a home run and a walk, Pelli was two-for-three with two singles, Matt Burger hit a long triple and Zach Lopez added a double.
Trevor Donnelly made a great catch on a popup at second base by ranging deep into the outfield. Matt Evans and Donnelly added hits to the offensive attack.
In the second game, New Canaan played Team Mizuno USA from Massachusetts.
Dillon Abate led off the game with a long triple and scored on a wild pitch. Jones was 2-for-4 with a home run, and Burger was 1-for-2 with a home run. Justin Greco, Justin Stemerman, Kyle DeMayo and Eric Cimino also contributed hits to the attack.
Lopez pitched two scoreless innings with five strikeouts, and Jones pitched two innings allowing one run with four strikeouts. New Canaan led 9-4 after two innings and won 12-5.
In the first playoff game on Sunday in a steady rain, the Fury jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Abate led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Burger. Jones walked, stole second and scored on a wild pitch. Burger stole second and scored on a ground out. Jones pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
New Canaan was in good position to make a run at the tournament championship as its pitching was set up nicely. However, the rain intensified and cancelled the rest of the game along with the remainder of the tournament.
