On Friday night, New Canaan boys fifth grade Black basketball team opened a weekend full of basketball against undefeated Westport PAL, claming a 39-27 win. Westport took the early lead, but New Canaan answered with an offensive charge lead by Ryan McAleer and Aaron Fishman.
In the second half, New Canaan gained control and established a solid lead behind aggressive defense from McAleer and Andrew Smith and strong outside shooting by Smith and Nick Brown. New Canaan pulled away in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
On Saturday, Hat City-Danbury brought its fast-paced game to the Saxe Gymnasium on Saturday, but New Canaan rose to the challenge with a lopsided 48-21 win. Jarom Hobi and Luke Morton set the pace early, forcing turnovers and shooting successfully from the backcourt.
New Canaan’s defense, lead by strong performances from Hobi, Gus Larson, and Julian Tonghini, contained Danbury and New Canaan prevailed in its second victory of the weekend.
On Sunday morning, New Canaan headed south to play Greenwich Flame and scored a 57-41 win. After both teams traded baskets in the early minutes, New Canaan slowly gained momentum with fast breaks by Ryan McAleer and Aaron Fishman. Brandon Sechan was a continuous outside threat, and New Canaan finished the first half with a five-point lead.
Thomas Marshall and Griffen Dayton contributed strong defensive efforts and solid shooting. Marshall established a formidable presence in the paint and led the team in rebounds. Well-executed team play all around carried the day and the weekend for New Canaan.
