Eastern Connecticut State University has named Matt LaBranche its new baseball coach, a source told Hearst Connecticut Monday night.
An official announcement is expected Tuesday.
LaBranche, the head coach at Western New England College since 2000, replaces Bill Holowaty, the 45-year veteran who retired in April amid allegations of abuse.
Holowaty built Eastern into a Division III power, totaling four national championships and 1,403 wins. In his 14-year tenure at WNEC, LaBranche has proven himself as one of the nation’s top Division III coaches, as well. He brings an impressive 429-187 career record to Eastern.
After Holowaty’s indefinite suspension, the Warriors spent the end of the 2013 season under the direction of interim coach Michael Grant. The team is eager to play for LaBranche, a source said, and is well-aware of his accomplishments at WNEC.
