MONTREAL – The Sacred Heart men’s basketball team won its second straight game in Montreal Monday night, holding on for a 79-70 win over club team Brookwood Bounce Elite. Louis Montes led the Pioneers with 16 points and added seven rebounds.
Sacred Heart had five players score in double-figures Monday night. Freshman Leo Vincent had 14 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Chris Evans had 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds. De’von Barnett added 12 points as Steve Glowiak chipped in 11. Phil Gaetano led all players with seven assists.
Brookwood took control of a back-and-forth opening six minutes with an 11-4 run to take a 19-12 lead with 12:49 to play in the first half. The Pioneers trailed by as much as six before a Barnett dunk sparked a 16-0 run over 5:14 to take a commanding 36-23 lead. Evans had five points in the run as Barnett and Vincent each had four. Brookwood closed the gap to five, 38-33, with 3:26 remaining in the half before a Montes three kicked off a 12-6 run for the Pioneers, taking a 50-39 lead at halftime. Sacred Heart scored 20 points off turnovers in the first half.
The Pioneers offense went cold to start the second half, allowing Brookwood Bounce Elite to go on an 8-1 to cut the deficit to four, 51-47, with 16:52 to play. Sacred Heart got the lead back into double-digits with a 7-1 run highlighted by a Vincent three-point play to take a 59-48 lead with 14:21 remaining. Brookwood got as close as five points in the second half, but back-to-back layups by Montes and Evans in the final 1:45 helped put the game out of reach and secure Sacred Heart’s second win in Montreal.
Sacred Heart shot 42.4% from the field and held Brookwood to 39.3%. The Pioneers also outrebounded their opponent by nine, 44-35.
