Rabbit tale

by:

The Trumbull couple accused of mistreating a bunch of bunny rabbits — and trashing their rented home in the process — agreed this afternoon turn over ownership of the growing rabbit clan to the town.

Edward Tighe, 48, and his wife, Stacey, 47, formally signed an agreement in Bridgeport Superior Court, giving town animal-control officials custody of the rabbits.

Seventeen bunnies, malnourished and living in their own filth, were seized from the Tighe home on Edison Road in July. The rabbits, doing that for which they are justly renowned, now number 25.

The Tighes still face 19 counts of animal cruelty as well as a charge of criminal damage to property.

More on today’s court proceedings from staff writer Daniel Tepfer later on connpost.com and in the Connecticut Post tomorrow.

Honk for peace

by:

Several Stratford high school students will be standing at the corner of Hawley Lane and Nichols Avenue in Stratford this Sunday doing their part to promote world peace.

About a half-dozen students from Stratford and Bunnell high schools will be holding signs encouraging people to honk their vehicle’s horns to show support for peace.

Simple.

Organizer Christine Beacon, 17, says although it’s a small gesture she hopes their demonstration makes a difference.

The group should be at the corner around noon and be there for several hours.

Sure critics will say the kids’ demonstration will mean nothing and war will go on.

Probably, but what are the critics, or most all of us,  doing for world peace.

Let’s give the kids … and peace … a chance.

Second suspect sought in Milford homicide

by:

Milford police this morning are looking for a second suspect in the murder of a New Haven man in Milford on Sunday night.

He is identified as Javier Cruz, described as about 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 200 to 230 pounds, brown hair and a scar on one of his ankles.

He is sought in connection with the fatal shooting of Jose Chevere, a New Haven man killed in what investigators call a drug-related dispute. His body was found in a wooded area off Zion Hill Road.

A West Haven man, Eusebio Melendez-Ventura, was charged with the killing Wednesday night.

Milford police hope the public can help locate Cruz, last seen Tuesday night at the New Haven Railroad Station. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Detective Division at 203-877-1465.

Stratford cop back at work

by:

Stratford Police Officer Justin LoSchiavo, the cop at the center of months of controversy after he suffered a seizure and crashed his cruiser into other cars at a busy intersection, is back on the job.

Sort of, anyway.

Staff writer Richard Weizel has learned that LoSchiavo, the circumstances of whose hiring ignited a firestorm engulfing Mayor James Miron, Police Chief John Buturla and his parents, recently retired Deputy Chief Joseph LoSchiavo and town Human Resources Assistant Linda LoSchiavo, returned to work this week for headquarters desk work for the first time since the notorious accident in early June.

Apparently, the 31-year-old is allowed to do little more than paperwork. His service revolver was taken away after the incident, pending outcome of an internal investigation. So patrol work is clearly not a current option for this patrol officer.

Weizel will have more details on the latest development in this story on connpost.com later today and in the Connecticut Post tomorrow.

Activist to address frosh….

by:

So you might ask, what can a fourth-generation shrimper say to inspire a group of freshmen about to embark on a four year undergraduate experience on the bucolic Fairfield University campus?

Campus officials say Diane Wilson, author of  “An Unreasonable Woman: A True Story of Shrimpers, Politicos, Polluters, and the Fight for Seadrift, Texas,” is an example of moral courage and intellectual persistence.” She is being held up as a working class model for students grappling with terms like “bio-diversity” and “sustainability.” Wilson, after fishing the bays of the Gulf Coast of Texas became an activist who fought against toxins dumped into the bay. She will address students during Fall Convocation, three days into the fall semester, onFriday, Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. on the Bellarmine Lawn.

Hopefully the gang will have questions. Freshmen all got her book over the summer to read.

‘PostSecret’ party in Bridgeport

by:

You’ve read about it in USA Today, the Connecticut Post and a host of national magazines. You’ve heard about it on a slew of  TV talk shows.

And now it’s in downtown Bridgeport.

Frank Warren’s nationally touring exhibition, “PostSecret,” which has captured the public’s imagination worldwide, is now drawing crowds at the art museum at Housatonic Community College, 900 Lafayette Boulevard.  And to celebrate the visit here, museum director Robbin Zella has planned a reception for  tonight (Aug. 27), from 5 to 7, that’s free and open to the general public.

More cultural phenomenon than art exhibit,  “PostSecret”  features scores of decorated postcards on which people have stated their innermost secrets, thoughts, fears and desires and sent anonymously to Warren. Lust, passion, regret, humor, sadness, pathos, joy and glee – it’s all there for the viewing through Sept. 13.

Since he began the project in 2004, Warren has received more than a quarter-million postcards, and more than 252 million people have visited his PostSecret.blogspot.com.

The Washington, D.C.- area  artist plans to visit the college on Sept. 10 to sign copies of his many books, all from HarperCollins. More on that later!
