Planners of the annual Columbus Day activities in Bridgeport are shifting in high gear.
The annual parade saluting the Italian explorer extraordinaire is set for 1 p.m. Oct. 11. The line of march stretches from the corner of Wayne Street and Jewett Avenue, south to Madison Avenue and ends at Beers Street, near the entrance to the parking lot of Central High School.
This year’s parade, sponsored by the Council of Italian-American Societies of Greater Bridgeport, this year has the theme of “Diverse Cultures Strengthen Freedom.”
Before the Columbus organizers take it to the streets, however, there will be two holiday concerts performed by the Second Marine Division Band. They are set for Oct. 9 and 10 in The Klein auditorium, 910 Fairfield Ave. Both concerts start at 7 p.m.; doors to the auditorium open at 6 o’clock.
And on a community-minded note, those attending the concerts are asked to bring non-perishable foods to the auditorium. The food collected will be distributed by the city’s Office of Veteran Affairs to local veterans in need.
Those planning to attend the concert still need tickets, even though they’re free. They can be picked up at Lupe’s Drug Store, 3129 Main St.
