SHELTON – A veteran city police sergeant was severely injured Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Leavenworth Road and Indian Well Road, according to Sgt. Robert Kozlowsky, police spokesman.
He said Sgt. Orville Smith, a 39-year veteran of the police department, was working a private duty job when the incident occurred, around 10:15 p.m.
Smith was taken to Bridgeport Hospital with severe injuries, said Kozlowsky. “He is conscious, but still in the intensive care unit,” he said Sunday.
Bruce Knapik, 63, of East Eaton Street, Bridgeport, the driver of the Nissan Frontier pick-up that struck Smith, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, Kozlowsky said.
He said Knapik “did not claim any injuries” as a result of the accident.
Kozlowsky said Smith was standing next to his police vehicle and that the vehicle had its lights flashing. He said Smith and the vehicle were in the shoulder of the southbound lane when Knapik, traveling southbound on Leavenworth Road, also known as Route 110, “veered” into the shoulder and “struck Smith and the police vehicle.”
The accident is being investigated by the Trumbull Police Traffic Division Reconstruction Team with assistance from The Shelton Police Traffic Division Reconstruction Team.
The accident is still under investigation, Kozlowsky said.
