Suspect arrested in Hartford cop’s shooting

HARTFORD (AP) — A city police officer survived an early morning shooting and a suspect has been taken into custody.

Police say the officer was shot in the shoulder while chasing a man down Mather Street in the city’s north east section just after midnight. Police had been called to the area to investigate a report of a man with a gun.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was taken to Saint Francis Hospital and was in stable condition Saturday afternoon.

Police recovered a rifle they believe was used in the shooting, and a suspect surrendered a short time later.

That man was being questioned Saturday and was expected to face several criminal charges.

Search for Billy Smolinski continues

SEYMOUR — A search and rescue team spent two hours Saturday morning searching undisclosed locations in town for William Smolinki Jr., a Waterbury man last seen alive in 2004.
During the search, one of the team’s K-9 dogs found a sweatshirt, which was taken as possible evidence.
Smolinski’s parents, who have vowed to never to stop searching for their son, have set up a tent in Klarides Plaza on Route 67 in an effort to raise awareness once again about a $60,000 reward offered to anyone who can provide information that leads to the return or the recovery of Smolinski.
Volunteers were also sent out to hand out flyers advertising the reward.
They will be out there until about 2 p.m. today.
