Derby attic fire burns storage, keepsakes

Derby firefighters extinguished a small fire contained in the attic of a duplex home at 44 Emmett Avenue around 8 p.m. Thursday.

The fire was started by a child who draped a blanket over a fan, according to resident Jan Terry.

“All my storage is gone,” said Terry, who shares the second floor of the duplex with her boyfriend, Fred Duhamie. “There were photos of my grandchildren, a t.v., antiques, stuff that I saved from when my son was a baby. And 35 pairs of shoes.”

Tenants on both floor of the duplex where home when the fire started, but no one was injured.
