FOIled in Easton

Whenever a town’s board or commission meets, they have to keep some sort of record of it. It’s so that anyone who wants to know what happened at that meeting can look it up.

Some towns take this charge very seriously. They broadcast the meetings live, have transcripts of the meetings available online, and keep digital recordings.

And then some towns are like Easton. If you want a written copy of the minutes, you might get them through the calendar on the town’s website. If you want an audio recording of the meeting, so you know exactly what was said, you have to request it from the first selectman’s office. And you may not get an immediate response. (I sent a request via email. They sent me a response via postal mail.)

The audio recordings can only be provided to you on audio tapes. So if you don’t have a tape player, you’re out of luck.

I would just like to point out:

This Sony digital recorder costs $63 at Best Buy. You can record up to 536 hours of audio on it. It’s compatible with a Mac or a PC. You just plug it into a computer to upload the files. Files that you can email, burn on to a CD, or post on to the internet. It’s quite an amazing little invention.

Well, wish granted. The Tri-State Transportation Campaign, in partnership with the City of Bridgeport and the Fairfield County Community Foundation, invite you to attend Sustainable Streets: Promoting Safety, Promoting Growth, on April 11.
