Black Rock Day has 5th annual Bed Race

BRIDGEPORT — Jimmy Orifice’s bed on wheels was the fastest to speed two blocks down Brewster Street Sunday morning, claiming the 5th annual Black Rock Day bed race in record time.

The race, a high point of the neighborhood festival, included seven mobile beds of varying designs — including the competition’s first-ever bunk bed with two riders, and a pirate ship that veered threateningly at spectators en route to the race’s slowest time ever.

Orifice, who owns Jimmy O’s Bait and Tackle on Fairfield Avenue, teamed up with three buddies to push a young boy across the finish line in a hair under 23 seconds. He said the victory was sweet for two reasons: One, they set the course record. Two, his bed last year fell apart mid-race.
