About 15 people, many dressed in brightly-colored traditional costumes, attended Bridgeport’s official observance of the 21st anniversary of Ukrainian independence Friday morning in front of City Hall on Lyon Terrace.
Proclamations from the Ukrainian Consulate in New York City and from Mayor Bill Finch were part of the brief ceremony, which included a flag-raising.
The Very Rev. Minhai Dubovici, pastor of the Holy Protection Ukrainian Catholic Church, said there are about 20,000 Ukrainians in the Bridgeport area, and that they make up a very vibrant ethnic group that is centered around their faith. Besides Holy Protection, the Ukrainian community is served by the Holy Trinity Orthodox Ukrainian Church, overseen by the Rev. Oleksandr Dviniatin.
