Oxford schools closed Friday; shelter open for showers only

by:

OXFORD – Schools will be closed Friday because there is stiill debris on the roadways, First Selectman George R. Temple announced Thursday.

He said the shelter set up at  Oxford High School, 61 Quaker Farms Road, will remain open until 8 p.m.  Thursday and reopen on Friday at 6 a.m. for showers only. The shelter will close at 3 p.m. in preparation for “Trick or Truck” activities which will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.

The three fire houses still have hoses out for residents who need water, but you must bring your own container, he said.

CL&P requests that anyone who has damage to the power lines going into their house should contact CL&P directly 1-800-286-2000.

CL& P is continuing to restore power and is at a slow pace, but there is major damage to the power system, and many poles must be replaced which takes time, Temple said.

He said town officials ask that residents be patient. “I know it has been a slow process and some people are without power, but be assured we are working very hard to get power restored to everyone and appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience,” Temple said. “We are in this together.”

Good Samaritan helps snuff Bridgeport house fire

by:

Maurice Bacon was driving down Garfield Avenue in Bridgeport when he looked left and saw fire and smoke billowing from the second story porch of a three-family home.

He parked and jumped out of the car.

“Anybody in the house?” he hollered.

Running toward the front door, he saw three people on the burning porch throwing pots of water onto the flames.

Bacon ran into the house, filled up a pot with water from the kitchen sink faucet and helped the trio water down the fire.

“I hope somebody would do the same if it was my house,” said Bacon, who is 55 and lives in the city’s North End. “If we didn’t get up there and throw water, it would have been a lot worse.”

Joe Blakeman, a Sandy Hook resident who has been staying with friends at the Garfield Avenue home since the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, said no one was home when the fire started. He and two friends were returning to the house from the Trumbull Mall when they saw the front porch engulfed in smoke and fire. He said he thinks a nearby tangle of power lines battered by the storm ignited the fire.

Blakeman parked and ran into the house, kicking down the door to the second-story unit to reach the flames. He and his friends started splashing the fire with water to prevent it from spreading inside the home.

Without Bacon’s help, he said the damage would have been much worse.
