Members of the Bridgeport City Council Monday unanimously chose Jack Banta to fill the vacancy left by Leticia Colon, D-131, when she returned to the school board.

Banta, a member of the Harbor Commission, had been her rumored replacement.

He was chosen by Democrats from his district and nominated Monday by Councilman Denese Taylor-Moye, D-131.

  1. Larry Laken says:

We live in a free society founded on a Jewish–Christian character of…traditions, now the price of that freedom is high. It has been covered in the blood of those who fight to protect it. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness means, that even those elements of our society that the rest of us may deem undesirable gets to share in that same right to freedom, the attack on these traditions I think fuels the debate on what we have come to refer to as the separation of church and state. The further we remove god from our country the closer we come to godlessness and chaos.
I pose this document to convey the existence of a belief in God and the necessity for that belief.

    “Does cold exist?”

Cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Everybody and every object are susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (- 460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have too little heat.

    “Does darkness exist?”

Darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact we can use Newton’s prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present.”

    “Does evil exist?”

“Evil does not exist, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love, that exist just as does light and heat. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love present in his heart. It’s like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.”

The epiphany here is the events that took place on Friday December 14th in Newtown Connecticut was not conducted by a gun. It was not aided by a failed security system. It was not the lack of superior enacted law. No evidence exists to suggest a lack of courage on the part of the people who those parents entrusted to care for their children. It was the work of a man who didn’t have God’s love present in his heart. Yes you can describe him as evil. You can say he was deranged even insane, yet the fact remains this young man was Godless and he committed a godless act.

The wrong that needs to be righted here is the godlessness of man, the loss of reason caused by the missing of god’s love within the heart. Even people who are born in the middle of the jungle or don’t believe in God or have never heard of God still knows Gods touch without knowing God. God loves us so much that he finds a way to reveal himself to us. He gives us a spark, a soul, a presence that we call self-awareness. We have free will, we have the ability to reason, we have the ability to ignore love and lose that spark but it’s God’s love when found that gives purpose to our lives.

What happened is without measure the most heinous and horrific act one man can impose upon another in fact there are no words capable of conveying the emotions felt by everyone who knows the feeling of God’s love. I only hope in our rush to blame, punish, prevent and revenge is we don’t lose sight of the fact that we have built a great society with marvelous tools and technology, that we don’t blame that society or its implements for what happened this Friday past for Adam Lanza could have just as easily used a couple gallons of gas and a match to commit this unreconcileable crime or like Timothy McVeigh at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995 when he managed to killed 168 people including 19 children in the day care center on the second floor he use some fertilizer and kerosene to take down the building. No law can prevent crime it can only punish the offender’s debasement caused to society. Let’s not blame the tools for the dastardly deeds of lost men let’s place the blame where it belongs, squarely on the mind of a cold blooded killer absent of compassion, absent morals, absent of logic, absent of reason and absent of love, God’s Love.
