Bpt. Council Education Committee meeting to decide why it exists

|

No joke.

Check out the agenda for the Bridgeport City Council’s Education and Social Services Committee meeting Oct. 9:

———-

AGENDA

Approval of Committee Minutes of June 13, 2012.

Approval of Committee Minutes of March 13, 2013

General Discussion to Discuss the purpose for which the Committee exist and attempt to create goals for the coming year.

———-

As we reported a few weeks back, the group has cancelled numerous meetings despite the fact some consider Bridgeport at the center of the national education reform debate.

Members are having a bit of an identity crisis. Some argue that the independently-elected Bridgeport Board of Education does all the heavy lifting, leaving them with little to do. Others say since the council funds the school board, the Education Committee should take more interest in how it’s spent.

  1. Lynda Bluestein says:

Let me get this right: the Education Committee comprised of members of the City Council have no idea what their job is or what they should be doing. They don’t grasp the significance of the eye of the tornado swirling dead center over Bridgeport’s school reform agenda and their role to be among the most knowledgeable on the Council to better advise their colleagues?
