Man gets 10 years for beating baby blind

BRIDGEPORT – A 20-year-old city man, accused of beating his 8-week-old son so severely he left the boy blind and unable to walk, was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison.
“The unspeakable happened to an innocent baby,” Superior Court Judge Robert Devlin told Luis Carattini. “Hurting your own child enough to blind him, I don’t know how you will be able to live with that but I could give you 100 years, or even a 1,000 years and it wouldn’t make this child better.”
The judge then sentenced Carattini to the plea bargain of 18 years, suspended after he serves 10 years in prison and followed by five years’ probation for first-degree assault and risk of injury to a child.
Carattini told the judge he had nothing to say.
