Five homeless after Bridgeport fire

|

Just after midnight Friday. Bridgeport firefighters received a call from police on routine patrol of a fire at 150 Beers St.

Doing it Local.com says police reported heavy smoke on the second floor but no fire.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy fire in the basement which found its way to the upper levels.

Homeowner Fred Savino said he was asleep with his wife and three children when fire broke out. “This first thing I did was go for the children” Savino told me.

All made it out safely although the temperature was 13 degrees.

The cold temperatures did cause some issues as the second fire hydrant firefighters attempted to get water from on Fairmont Avenue was frozen. Firefighters made do with water on the firetrucks and a working hydrant on Beers Street.

The family’s dog also made it out safely but is still on loose at the time of this writing at 3am. There were no reported injuries. The fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.

It will be interesting to know if there were any smoke detectors in the building, which would alert the people of the fire.
