School locked down after nearby shooting

|

Bryant Elementary School in Bridgeport was locked down for a short time Friday afternoon after a shooting was reported on a nearby street.

The school district confirms that the lockdown has been lifted, that all students are fine and that school has been dismissed.

The shooting reportedly happened on Hancock Avenue near Fairfield Avenue around 3 p.m. Friday. One person was reportedly taken to the hospital with injuries, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.

Police reportedly blocked parts of the surrounding streets with crime tape and squad cars to investigate the incident, but those units are beginning to leave the scene.

Staff Writer Linda Lambeck contributed to this report.

We need more laws that will make it illegal to shoot someone near a school.
