Fire tore through a home on Bridgeport’s East Side on Wednesday, severly damaging the house and killing two cats and a dog inside.
Neighbors said they saw a home at the end of Berkeley Place burst into flames Wednesday afternoon, with the blaze raging out of its windows before fire trucks rumbled into the narrow street that was slushy with snow and ice from the morning storm.
Assistant Fire Chief Richard Thode said that none of the people who live in the house were home at the time.
Fire crews fought the blaze from both Berkeley Place and nearby Horace Street. They had to run hose lines for hundreds of feet on Berkeley Place and had to walked up a steep set of snow stairs to reach the fire scene from the street.
Fire Department spokesman William Kaempffer said the fire was at 85 Berkeley Place and was reported at about 2:30 p.m.
