A fight between two gangs that spilled out of Bassick High School and into a city street Wednesday afternoon caused a basketball game at the school to be put off until a later date.
Shively Willingham, the special assistant for safety, climate and security for Bridgeport Public Schools, confirmed that the incident was gang-related.
He also said that there was a report of gun being fired in the incident, but he said the police could not find a weapon or evidence that one had been fired.
Willingham said late Wednesday that the fight involved students at Bassick and older people who were not students. He said that students were arrested during the altercation. He said they face suspension once they are out of police custody, as well as possible expulsion.
“Any time when we have students who disrupt the educational process and put other students or people at risk, we take that very seriously,” he said.
The basketball game has tentatively been rescheduled for Thursday.
