NORWALK – A Trumbull elementary school gym teacher was charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop here.

John Elliff, 52, of 4 Lillian Drive, Trumbull, was charged with operation while under the influence. He was released after posting $50 bond and given a court date of March 14.

Elliff, is a gym teacher at Middlebrook Elementary School in Trumbull. Trumbull school officials said they were unavailable for comment.

Shortly after midnight on March 6, a resident called police about a car driving erratically on North Main Street, Lt. Paul Resnick said.

The car was stopped by officers on West Avenue and Resnick said the driver, identified as Elliff, failed a field sobriety test. He was then taken to the Police Department where Elliff was given a breathalyzer test. Resnick said Elliff was found to have a blood/alcohol level of .892, just over the legal limit of .08.

“He wasn’t disruptive and fully cooperated with officers,” Resnick said.
