Trumbull mother, daughter charged with cruelty

TRUMBULL – A mother and daughter were arrested after police said they abandoned their dog and eight puppies in their Main Street home for nearly a month without food and water.

Deidre Mines, 53, and her 28-year-old daughter Charlotte Mines, were each charged with nine counts of animal cruelty.

Deidre Mines was arraigned Monday while her daughter is to be in court on Tuesday.

According to police, on Oct. 7, 2013, police responded to at home at 5242 Main St. on a complaint of an emaciated dog. When officers entered the home they found the inside in shambles with no electrical service, police said.

In a back bedroom police said they found a female Pit Bull lying on a bed, her bones showing through her skin. While attending to this dog, police said they heard whimpering from another room. There they said they found the eight puppies similarly emaciated.

Police said the dog and her puppies had apparently been living off whatever they could find in the house including a bead necklace, push pins and bits of cloth.

Mines and her daughter and moved out of the house about a month before. When police said they finally contacted Charlotte Mines about the dogs she replied, “Oh yeah, they all died huh.”

Animal Control Officer Lynn DellaBianca said the dogs were all returned to good health after being taken into custody by the town and have since been adopted.
