BRIDGEPORT – A man undergoing a mental competency hearing Thursday went berserk in a courtroom at the Golden Hill Street courthouse, injuring several judicial marshals.
Leon Hardy, 30, had been standing before Superior Court Judge Earl Richards when he began yelling and waving his arms around, according to witnesses. When marshals attempted to get him under control, witnesses said Hardy attacked the marshals, punching one in the face and abdomen and slamming another in a pillar.
The courtroom was quickly evacuated as a marshal doused Hardy with pepper spray in an attempt to get him under control. More marshals rushed to the scene and they were eventually able to get Hardy handcuffed and take him from the courtroom.
Hardy, who was awaiting trial for breach of peace, was expected to be charged for the melee.
