BRIDGEPORT – Police are investigating the early Sunday morning fire that killed a city woman and severely injured her 2-year-old daughter.

Marisol Estrada, 43, died Monday afternoon at Bridgeport Hospital. An autopsy was scheduled later in the day to determine her cause of death. In addition to injuries associated with the fire police sources said she appeared to have a head injury.

The condition of her daughter, Allianna, who is in Shriners Hospital for Children in Boston, was not available.

Estrada and her daughter were rescued by firefighters from a second-floor apartment at 223 Washington Ave.

When firefighters arrived at the scene they found Allianna’s father, Jose Roman, 53, outside of the building.  Police said he had escaped from the building and was attempting to reenter.  He was listed in good condition at Bridgeport Hospital.

Firefighters heard a woman screaming from the second floor apartment and immediately set up a ladder to the window. Two firefighters dragged a hose in with them as they went into the apartment to try and find Estrada and her daughter. Other firefighters went into the apartment through the door with extinguishers and helped get the two fire victims to the ladder and out the window.
