Things to do to prepare for the snowstorm

There is a good chance Connecticut could get slammed with the most significant snowstorm of winter on Friday.

As much as 20 inches could fall in the northeast corner of the state, forecasters say, with between 6 to 8 inches of a “wintry mix” expected along the shore. But a lot depends on what track the still-forming storm takes, with the possibility that it could deal the state a glancing blow as it aims for Cape and the Maine coast.

BRIDGEPORT — Just before 3 a.m. Saturday, a city police officer on routine patrol spotted two houses on fire on Orchard Street.

Assistant Fire Chief Ismael Pomales told us they got ahead of the fire and did not let it get ahead of them. The fire appears to have started in the back left corner of a vacant house and to the occupied house next door.

The Red Cross was originally called to the scene but soon cancelled. No firefighters or civilians were injured in the blaze and fire officials have begun their investigation into the cause.

From DoingItLocal.com.: Just before 2:45 Sunday morning a call came in that a Bridgeport police officer was involved in a motor vehicle accident at State Street and Mountain Grove Street.  According to police, the officer was shaken up but should be alright, and was taken to the hospital.  The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to nearby hospital with unknown injuries. Police are investigating.

A single engine Piper Archer airplane with two passengers crashed at Sikorsky airport in Stratford about 10:10 p.m. Saturday.

The plane came in low and landing gear struck blast fence, ripping off the left wing, which burst into flames, the airport manager said.

One person was injured but walked away. Stratford Fire Union President Bill Hansen said the injured party has a hip fracture. Both parties are stable.

“What caused the accident was a lack of a safety area,” said John Ricci, airport manager. There were no signs of malfunctioning equipment in aircraft.
