Judge grants Stratford woman permission to visit her cats

by:

A judge granted a 90-year-old Stratford woman permission to visit four cats seized from her home last year by animal control officers, the woman’s son said Monday.

Marion Perreira and her son, William Perreira, appeared in court Monday on civil charges filed against them by the Town of Stratford. The case was continued to March 19.

The town is suing Marion Perreira for ownership of the four cats seized from her home. The cats were seized because the Perreiras violated a signed agreement with the town by failing to provide required veterinary care to five cats in their possession, according to Town Attorney Tim Bishop.

Marion Perreira owns and cared for the animals, but William Perreira lives in the home and co-signed the agreement.

The town is seeking custody of the  cats or nearly $6,000 in fees to cover expenses the town has paid for animal care.

In addition to the civil suit, Marion and William Perreira have each been charged with several counts of animal cruelty.

The Perreiras are fighting the charges.

Snowy Owl sighting at Stratford Point

by:

Birdwatchers for the Connecticut Audubon Society spotted a snowy owl Wednesday at Stratford Point.

Snowy owls are rare here in Connecticut. The majority of these birds live in the Arctic, but some migrate south to Canada or the northern states.

These birds have a keen sense of hearing and, unlike most owls, they are not nocturnal.

Sick kitten’s health improves, but now she has ringworm

by:

Penelope, a 6-month-old Persian cat who recently had an eye and part of her lungs removed due to infections she contracted from an unknown incident, is recovering well from her surgeries — but now she has ringworm.

Ringworm is a treatable skin infection.

Penelope, who is tiny with a smooshed face and a long, orange coat of fur, is being cared for by Stratford Cat Project, a non-profit volunteer-run organization dedicated to the rescue of homeless and abandoned cats.

Penelope had about 20 percent of her lungs removed in late April because they were infected, making it difficult for her to breathe. In early April, the cat’s infected right eye was removed.

The cat is recovering well from her surgeries, according to an update from the cat’s foster caretaker posted on the Stratford Cat Project Facebook page.

Six-month-old cat recovering from lung surgery

by:

Penelope, a 6-month-old Persian cat, is recovering at home after having part of her lung removed this week.

The cat is drowsy and in pain, but on the path to recovery, according to Joanne Galante, vice president of Stratford Cat Project, a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to the rescue of homeless and abandoned cats.

Penelope came under the care of the cat rescue group after suffering an unknown injury at the home of her breeder. She had infected lungs and was having trouble breathing. So earlier this week 20 percent of one of her lungs was removed.

Her right eye was also infected and had to be removed earlier this month.

Here is a contributed photo taken of Penelope upon her homecoming from the animal hospital Wednesday night.

Plight of Bowers family in Stratford inspires donors

by:

The story of a multi-generational Stratford family struggling to pay medical bills for two pets that survived a fire that gutted their two-family home last week has inspired several Greater Bridgeport residents to donate money to help ease the family’s troubles.

Gerald Bowers, 88, and his son Jerry Jr., lost their home, most of their belongings and four pets in a morning blaze that torched their house on Soundview Avenue last Monday. The family’s few salvageable possessions were stolen from the boarded up house in the first few days following the fire.

I received five phone calls and three emails the day after a story about the family’s troubles was printed in the Connecticut Post from animal lovers and concerned residents wanting to help. Mary, an 88-year-old Greater Bridgeport woman, told me the story of the Bowers’ misfortune broke her heart. She and five other donors said they planned to mail donations to the family Wednesday.

Soundview Ave. house fire kills 3 cats, 1 dog

by:

STRATFORD — A father and son were treated by paramedics Monday morning after a fire broke out at 362 Soundview Avenue home.

Both men were asleep when the fire started. The son smelled smoke when he woke up, then went downstairs to wake up his father. The men tried to get out of the front of the house and the back of the house, but could not, so they exited through a side window.

Stratford Fire Department Asst. Chief Brian Lampart said that four pets died in the fire, one dog and three cats. Two other pets survived, Lampart said.

Firefighters said the blaze began when an oxygen tank exploded in one of the bedrooms after a television shorted out.

Here’s a video from the scene:
