Early season showdown

Three teams from the FCIAC are ranked in the latest New Haven Register baseball poll.

Greenwich (7-0) is ranked No. 4,  McMahon (6-1) is ranked No. 5 and St. Joseph (4-1)  is No. 8.

The Senators and Cadets were both ranked last week but the Cardinals are newcomers to the poll, leaping in at No. 4.

Baseball is a funny game and, as we see almost every year, any of those ranked teams could easily lose to an unranked team on any given day but in this case those do seem to be the three strongest teams so far in the FCIAC.

Ridgefield and Staples will disagree but the season is young and time will tell who the real contenders are.

There is a chance that none of those teams end up in a dog pile on the field at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in June but if I had to pick, at least one of those three ranked teams will at least be playing on the final day.

That brings us to Wednesday’s matchup between McMahon and Greenwich.

As we said yesterday, Casey Gaynor will be starting for Greenwich and will most likely be locked up with, maybe the league’s best player, in UConn bound Bryan Daniello.

Doug Bonjour was at McMahon vs New Canaan Monday but Senators coach John Cross was non-committal about whether Daniello would toe the rubber in Greenwich.

Last year Daniello out-dueled the Cardinals Dylan Callahan in Norwalk.

Callahan took a no-hitter into the 7th inning while making his first varsity start but Daniello was superb, matching Callahan all the way as the Senators won.

We will check back in tomorrow night after the game and see where we stand.

Nothing long term will be decided but it should be fun so come on down to Greenwich for tomorrow’s 4 p.m. start.
