It seems fitting the FCIAC playoff field would not be set until Warde beat Ridgefield Saturday afternoon after the teams were rained out Friday.

Here are the pairings for the FCIAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday.

All games at 4 p.m.

No. 8 Greenwich (11-7) at No. 1 Staples (16-2)

Regular season: The Wreckers beat the Cardinals 2-1 in 9 innings.

Skinny: Staples is as hot as any team but drawing Greenwich is no picnic with ace Kyle Dunster expected to take the hill for the Cardinals. The Wreckers have experience and a deep lineup while the Cardinals have been a work in progress and improving as the season has progressed.

No. 7 Ludlowe (11-7) at No. 2 St. Joseph (14-4)

Regular season: Cadets beat the Falcons 4-3.

Skinny: Cadets have won six in a row with their lineup and pitching lining up at the right time. Ludlowe had to beat New Canaan in the final game and get help from Warde to get in but now that they are here, they can do some work.

No. 6 Warde (12-6) at No. 3 Darien (13-5)

Regular season: Mustangs beat the Blue Wave 7-5.

Skinny: Both teams raced out to fast starts this season and both won enough down the stretch to make the playoffs. Darien has a decent home-field advantage and did well securing a top 4 seed.

No. 5 Trumbull (12-6) at No. 4 New Canaan (12-6)

Regular season: Rams beat Eagles 7-4 on walk-off grand slam by Alex LaPolice.

Skinny: Both teams were playing their best baseball heading into their head-to-head last week. That grand slam ended up giving New Canaan the home game where they can enjoy the friendly confines of Mead Park one more time this season. Both teams have deep quality pitching and strong lineups 1 through 9.
