Former New Canaan High School catcher Curt Casali has been called up to play for the Tampa Bay Rays.
It is the first trip to the majors for Casali who hit .314/.500/.429 in 22 games at Double-A this year, earning himself a promotion to the Triple-A Durham Bulls where he was hitting .237/.335/.359.
Ryan Hanigan was moved to the 15-day DL, making room for Casali. Tampa also moved Wil Myers to the 60-day DL in a corresponding move.
Scouting reports indicate that Casali will not hit for much power in the majors but will draw base on balls and will be an overall average hitting catcher.
The 6’2, 225 pound Casali has shown the skills necessary to be a back-up catcher in the majors with the potential to be a starter.
Casali played at Vanderbilt before being drafted by the Tigers in the 10th round of the 2011 amateur draft and played in their organization before being traded to Tampa this past winter.
Casali was a two-sport captain for New Canaan, leading the baseball team to the FCIAC championship and the football team to the State championship in 2006.
