St. Joseph’s Vito Montelli has been named the ESPNHS national boys basketball coach of the year.

The 79-year old Montelli, who started the program 50 years ago and is the only boys basketball coach the school has ever had, won a New England record 11th state championship last month with a 62-54 victory over Hillhouse in the Class LL championship game. It was the Cadets’ second consecutive title.

Montelli’s career record is 878-328. He has the most wins in New England high school boys basketball history.

He was the Connecticut Post’s Super 15 Coach of the Year.

“It’s really a humbling honor and I’m thrilled to be selected because there’re so many deserving coaches out there,” Montelli told ESPNHS. This is special for our school, our players and our coaching staff.
