Cardillo checking in here from double-header night at Webster Bank Arena.
Game one is in the books, with Fairfield Prep crushing Hamden 69-34.
The big news here is Prep’s 7-footer Paschal Chukwu notched his first career triple-double, finishing with 10 points, 15 rebounds and 13 blocks. Not a shabby night considering he accomplished it inside three quarters.
“I had no idea,” Chukwu said when told of his triple-double.
Granted, Hamden didn’t have very much size, but Chukwu — a Trinity Catholic transfer — has proven a transformed player with the Jesuits. More than that, a dominant player for Prep, which is currently No. 3 in the state poll.
It all sets up a huge match-up Tuesday night at Alumni Hall with Prep hosting No. 1 Hillhouse.
Get there early, figures to be a packed house for (hype alert) THE GAME OF THE SEASON in Connecticut high school hoops.
Other Notes:
* Talked to WBA head-honcho Howard Saffan, who said the Bridgeport Basketball Classic is still in line to be played at the Arena “sometime in February.”
* Freshman Ryan Murphy led Prep with 19 points. Kid appears to have star potential. Scores in bunches and has a very nice touch around the rim.
