Cardillo here after one hell of a game between Bunnell and ND-Fairfield, won by the Lancers 73-72.
We’re about halfway through league play in the SWC. The question from here is, does the league have a No. 1 contender?
From where I sit it seems pretty wide open.
“Bunnell, Stratford, Bethel, Kolbe are pretty good. Anybody at any time can beat anybody,” Notre Dame coach Vin Laczkoski said, throwing his Lancers into the mix as well. “It’s five teams who have a chance, whoever gets hot at the end of February could win it.”
It’s hard to argue with those five teams.
Bunnell (9-2) probably has the best offense and two go-to scorers in Matt Nolting and Issac Vann.
Stratford (6-3) , even without top-scorer Bernard Brantley, has shown it can win games.
Bethel (10-1) has a big-time player in Daniel Garvin and its only loss came to Bunnell earlier this week.
Kolbe Cathedral (7-2) is dangerous so long as it has Ian Gardner and plays tough defense.
Notre Dame (8-3) does have the region’s top-scorer in Danny Upchurch who can take over games in the final minutes either from outside or getting to the line.
Are any of these five an out-and-out favorite? Is somebody else, like Immaculate lurking the shadows ready to pounce?
Bunnell coach Pat Yerina probably has the best take, “It comes down to a three game tournament at the end, set yourself up at the end to make a run.”
So with a few weeks left in the season, who do you think will win the SWC boys basketball tournament?
