Greenwich qualifies for FCIACs

|

The Cardinal Crazies live up to their name as Alex McMurray tries to keep a straight face.

Greenwich‘s hopes of making the FCIAC tournament seemed slim at best after it lost to Bassick last week but, somehow, everything broke the Cardinals’ way this week and after a four year absence are back in the tournament.

The Cards had to win out, which they did, surviving OT against New Canaan and rallying from down 11 in the fourth quarter to beat Danbury.

Greenwich also needed Bassick to lose Saturday and Monday, which it did, and Staples to lose Monday and Wednesday, which it did, falling to Bassick, oddly enough, Wednesday just as Greenwich was beginning its rally in the fourth.

This was all made way more fun by Twitter as the Cardinals Crazies knew immediately when the Bassick score was posted and started chanting “Bassick won, Bassick won” causing Greenwich Coach Bill Brehm to wave his hands in the air.

Brehm and the Greenwich players both said after the game that knowing the result of that game gave then extra motivation to rally.

The Cards missed several easy layups and were awful from the foul line for the first three quarters but turned it on when they had to and now they are in the tournament, facing No. 1 St. Joseph Saturday.

Greenwich has played very well against the top teams in the league this year while playing down to lesser competition like New Canaan and Darien, so, they could be a dangerous team if they get hot and play the way they are capable of.
