The Weston boys lacrosse team defeated neighboring Staples for the first time in four years.
Host Weston beat the Wreckers 8-5 behind three goals each from Jack Scheufele and Sean Fumai. Scheufele also had three ground balls and senior captain Lyle Mitchell was a stabilizing force for the Trojans.
Mitchell scored late in the game to close the door on Staples. Grant Limone had a big game in net for Weston with 10 saves, which kept the Westporters from closing the gap.
Joey Zelkowitz tried to rally the Wreckers back with two goals and an assist.
Junior captain Quinn Mendelson was a defensive stalwart for Staples with four ground balls and forced a turnover late in the game.
Playing on the road has been a problem for the Wreckers. Staples is 0-5 on the road. Conversely, the Wreckers are 3-1 at home, including a victory over Greenwich.
