Masuk sharp in win over Pomperaug

Howdy, Cardillo here checking in after Masuk’s 8-1 win over Pomperaug Friday afternoon.

Not a lot to say, frankly. Kind of a ho-hum game that took forever, in part to a widely inconsistent strikezone that neither team seemed too happy about.

Masuk, No. 5 in this week’s Register poll, deserves its billing as a Top 10 team and is probably the favorite, along with Brookfield, in the SWC playoffs later this month. Pomperaug, an SWC finalists last season, is solid with a strong top of its lineup but was undone by seven errors — mostly on routine plays in the infield.

A couple things of note:

* Masuk had a bunch of work done on its field, including leveling off the infield from a range of three inches to 18-inches across the diamond. There are also new fences up around the diamond and some “chips” behind the plate and touching foul territory. It looks nice.

* Tatum Buckley is a very solid pitcher at the high school level, but she might be an even better hitter. She also stole home in the sixth on a double-steal with a runner at first.

* Pomperaug’s Christine Pinnkathok stole second base in the third inning and got plucked in the face with the ball. Not a big deal since she had a mask over the opening of the helmet to block it.

* Lots of hit batters in this one. The Masuk trainer was busy.
