Greenwich holds off Staples, keeps FCIAC Tournament hopes alive

Alison Kach turned in another strong outing for Greenwich in its 4-3 win against Staples on Friday.

The Greenwich High School softball team is in must-win mode for the remainder of its regular season.

With three games left on their regular season schedule, the Cardinals know they would be well served to win them all to qualify for the eight-team FCIAC Tournament. Currently, Greenwich holds an 8-6 record in the FCIAC and is 10-6 overall.  Entering Friday’s  games, Danbury and New Canaan hold the seventh and eighth spots with 9-5 league records.

Greenwich took a step in the right direction Friday, edging visiting Staples, 4-3. Junior pitcher Alison Kach struck out five and repeatedly worked out of jams for the Cardinals, who scored three runs in the first inning. Kach helped her own cause with an RBI triple, first baseman Ebba Mark had an RBI double and shortstop Erica Ambrogio hit an RBI single for Greenwich. Sophomore Rebecca DeCarlo went 3 for 3 with a triple and a run scored for the Cardinals, who will visit formidable St. Joseph (9-2 FCIAC) on Monday, before hosting Warde (7-7 FCIAC Wednesday, and Danbury (9-5) on Friday in a game that could determine the final seed.

“We have to win all of our games, ” GHS coach Mary Beth Fratello said. “Every game is huge for us right now and we need wins to get into the FCIAC playoffs.”

“This win today was very important for us,” Kach said. “Our goal is to make both FCIACs and states and this win gets us that much closer.”
