Rockville-Foran, Class L: it all ends somewhere

by:

Foran finishes 25-2, but after 19 wins in a row, that second loss comes in the last game of the year. Tough way to go.

Rockville waited, then hit. Rams coach Frank Levick said he found video of Foran sophomore pitcher Jess Harkness that convinced him they needed to be patient early. Harkness walked two batters on four pitches in the first inning, walked four in all in the first two innings. When she found the strike zone, Rockville put balls in play.

Three errors, two runs: I thought back to the SCC semifinals during tonight’s game, when Jeff Bevino said his team hadn’t had a chance to show how good it was defensively, with Harkness pitching so dominantly. The Lions made some good plays here in the state final, but they were also hit with three errors, two of which produced an unearned run.

Got to work for it: All three times I saw Foran, Bevino talked about being aggressive. They tried something tonight and didn’t get it: Tie game, bottom four, Fallon Bevino on second, one out. Grounder to third, and Bevino takes off on the throw. Out at first; out at third (with I think the shortstop covering, though don’t hold me to it). Got the impression Jeff Bevino wasn’t sold on that call at third, but it happens. This sure seemed like a team that looked to make things happen (like the Dani Kemp delayed steal that turned into the SCC-winning run). There’s always a risk involved there. Again, it happens. If you’ve seen the Lions before, you (and by you I mean “I”) probably nod and say “trying something.” If you haven’t, you’re probably asking what the heck that was… especially when Chrissy Pettengill hits one over the left-field fence a blink later.

Always good to be in the DeLuca Field press box, where I’ve spent a lot of fun nights over the years. Learned there that Pettengill hit a DeLuca home run before a Brakette did (five home games to date).

Act like you’ve been there…: Maybe easier for the Lions, who were champions last year, but Rockville played a poised game for a team that had never been to a final. No errors. Few if any mistakes, period.

…because maybe you’ll be back: Foran had two seniors in the lineup; Rockville had one. Shall we try this again in 52 weeks?

Class L softball preview capsule: Foran vs. Rockville

by:

Foran pitcher Taylor Harkness

WHAT: Class L softball final

WHEN: Saturday, 7

WHERE: DeLuca Field, Stratford

SEEDS/RECORDS: No. 1 Foran (25-1) vs. No. 3 Rockville (21-2)

PREVIOUS TITLES: Foran 2 (Class L: 2002, 2011); Rockville: none

RUN TO FINAL: Foran: bye; beat No. 17 E.O. Smith 3-0; beat No. 8 Wethersfield 4-0; beat No. 5 Brookfield 2-1 (8); Rockville: bye; beat No. 14 Sheehan 3-2; beat No. 6 Fitch 4-0; beat No. 2 Maloney 6-0

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Foran: Sr. SS Brooke Phelan, Soph. P Jess Harkness; Jr. 3B Marissa Bruno; Jr. 1B Gina Georgetti; Soph. OF Fallon Bevino; Rockville: Jr. P Kaitlyn Lajoie; Jr. Chrissy Pettingill

OUTLOOK: The Class L final pits two teams with different chances to make history. Foran is looking to repeat as the division champion, likely earning the No. 1 spot in the state poll for the second straight year with a win. Meanwhile, Rockville is in uncharted territory, making it past the quarterfinal round of the state tournament for the first time. It also features a contrast in pitchers between the hard-throwing Lions’ lefty Harkness and the Rams’ junior righty Lajoie, who didn’t throw a fastball in her team’s semifinal win over Maloney. Foran has a strong lineup from 1-9 with Bevino, Georgetti, Bruno, Phelan and Jenna Zaccarelli each batting .400 or better, meaning Lajoie will have to have all her trickery working to keep the Lions from defending their crown.

PREDICTION: Foran 4, Rockville 1

Class LL softball championship: Amity vs. Southington

by:

Amity's Corina Zdrowski (right)

WHEN: Friday, 7

Amity coach Bob Purcell has a conference with his team in the Class LL semifinals.

WHERE: DeLuca Field, Stratford

PREVIOUS TITLES: Southington 14 (Class LL: 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, 1999, 2004); Amity 4 (Class LL: 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005).

SEEDS/RECORDS: No. 1 Southington (22-2); No. 6 Amity (22-5)

RUN TO FINAL: Southington: beat No. 32 NFA 14-0; beat No. 16 Stamford 1-0; beat No. 8 Danbury 9-1; beat No. 4 Masuk 5-1; Amity: beat No. 27 Newtown 8-1; beat No. 22 New Milford 9-3; beat No. 3 Darien 4-2; beat No. 2 Westhill 4-3

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Southington: Jr. P Jordyn Moquin; Sr. SS Nicole Rossitto; Amity: Jr. OF Corina Zdrowski; Sr. P/INF Dana Blydenberg.

OUTLOOK: These teams have met in the Class LL five times, with Southington winning the first three (1979, 1999, 2000) while Amity has taken the last two (2002, 2003). There should be plenty of scoring chances in this game with the two schools combining for 56 runs in the tournament, with only two shutouts — both pitched by Southington. Three of Amity’s five losses are to Class L finalist Foran, while one of Southington’s two defeats came at the hands of Class M finalist Rocky Hill.

PREDICTION: Southington 4, Amity 2.

Southington knocks off Masuk

by:

Tough break for the Masuk softball team.

For the second straight year their season ends with a semifinal loss in the state tournament, at DeLuca Field no less. Throw in the fact the Panthers have also lost in the SWC semifinals — also at DeLuca — and perhaps next year coach Jacqui Sheftz can petition for her team to play at West Haven.

That said, Masuk has a long track record of success in Stratford, including five-straight SWC titles at DeLuca and a pair of state titles at the venue during the Rachele Fico era.

How’s this for coincidence, though?

When Masuk lost to Brookfield in the 2012 SWC semifinals it didn’t strikeout against Bobcats starter Brittany Fusek. Again, Monday, against Southington in the Class LL semifinals they didn’t K against Jordyn Moquin, yet still lost — and didn’t get a hit until the sixth inning.

“Southington … we hit the ball to them and they made the plays. Their defense was on the top of its game today,” Sheftz said. “It was the matter of us catching a couple breaks and we did in the seventh inning but its really hard to come back.”

If there’s some upside for Masuk, it started five sophomores and four juniors Monday — so barring injuries, its entire team should return for another run at postseason glory.

There was a sense from talking with Masuk pitcher Tatum Buckley after the game that the Panthers want to win so badly that it’s affecting their play, if only a little bit.

“We all want it so bad, that maybe we start to press sometimes,” she said.

Other Thoughts:

* Masuk centerfielder Brittany DaMotta made a very nice shoestring catch in the first.

* Southington third baseman Alyssa Dumphy had an absolute cannon for a throwing arm.

* It was cloudy all game, with a little rain, but it held off despite looking ominous and the game took barely over an hour.

* Word is, if Amity beats Westhill in the other Class LL semifinal at DeLuca that the final will be played Friday night. If Westhill wins, likely it’s the 7 p.m. game Saturday night.

Masuk has too much firepower

by:

Masuk is a force to be reckoned with. Righty Tatum Buckley may not be Rachele Fico, but is nevertheless very dominating and one of the top pitchers in the state as she showed in no-hitting Staples.
Buckley’s battery-mate, Kayla Crisci, is great defensively and swings a powerful bat.
Nikki Bukovsky is Staples’ best player and limited the damage once she entered the pitcher’s circle. Bukovsky is expected to show good things in the Junior All-Star game.

Foran rolls into Class L semis

by:

There’s a lot of high school softball left to be played between now and next Saturday, but it’s going to be very tough for me to choose my final No. 1 in the Register poll if Foran wins Class L and Seymour wins Class M.

Foran will be the SCC champion, with one loss, while Seymour will be undefeated and the NVL champ — if both win out.

I write this because Foran is probably the most impressive team I’ve seen all season, as they took care of No. 8 Wethersfield in the Class L quarterfinals, 4-0, with relative ease. Is it enough to leapfrog Seymour, which has been entrenched at the No. 1 spot, however?

I asked Eagles’ coach Brian Fanelli if he thought Foran was the best team he played against this year?

His answer:

“By far, top to bottom, if they lose I’d be shocked.”

Who’s No. 1 in any Connecticut high school sport, on the surface, is a silly argument, yet some people take it very seriously, so with that in mind my final vote is going to be very difficult if both No. 1 seeds win out.

Other thoughts:

* Foran catcher Dani Kemp might be the fastest catcher in the state. Flies around the bases.

* Foran pitcher Jess Harkness might have been the shortest player on the field, but she throws really hard. Plus she pounds the outside corner for lefties and inside corner for righties. Tough combo, as Wethersfield found out.

* Foran centefielder Rebekah DeRosa made a nice catch on the warning track in the fourth inning to rob Alex Swanson.

* Foran/Brookfield in the Class L semifinals next week should have plenty of hitting. Could be a good one.

An update on Brookfield coach Frank Bonacci

by:

As first reported by the Connecticut Post’s Mike Cardillo last Friday, the Brookfield softball team endured a scary night at DeLuca Field in their SWC semifinal win over Masuk when in the third inning coach Frank Bonacci needed to be carted away in an ambulance for an apparent lapse in breathing.

It was the Bobcats who gave their coach a scare Wednesday, when they were within a strike of bowing out of the Class L second round at the hands of 12th-seeded Berlin.

The fifth-seeded Bobcats rallied for a 3-2 win in eight innings. Bonacci — who had been given an epidural earlier in the day last Friday, for a pinched nerve in his neck, that he said was unrelated to the in-game incident — gave an update on his health after the game.

“It was pretty scary,” said Bonacci, who was given the option of postponing last Saturday’s SWC final against Oxford (which the Bobcats lost 3-2) to Sunday but felt well enough to coach. “(The doctors) still aren’t sure exactly what was wrong but they think it might be asthma-related, maybe. I’ve never had asthma and that was the first thing (my primary care physician and I) talked about. They were just trying to rule out heart attack, which, honestly, that’s what I thought I was having. I was laboring (to breathe).

“I’m starting to feel better,” he added. “But it was pretty damn scary.”
