Sports roundup for June 4, 2014

It was Super Tuesday in area high school sports. The state tournaments are in play with champions to be crowned very soon. Here are the results from a busy and exciting day in sports.

State high school baseball playoffs

No. 17 Amity shocks top-seeded Fairfield Prep to knock the Jesuits from the tournament. Click here to read more about the big upset.

After a crushing loss to Warde in the FCIAC championship, Trumbull re-groups and rebounds with a win over Xavier in the Class LL playoffs. Read more about the Eagles’ victory here.

Nick Williams authors a gem on the pitchers mound, leading St. Joseph’s into the next round of the state baseball playoffs. Read more about Williams’ 10-strikeout performance.

Darien comes through with a clutch effort to defeat Avon in Class L playoffs.   New Canaan is out! The Rams reign as Class L champions is over as they lose to Cheney Tech on Tuesday afternoon. Video: Blue Wave rolls.

One and done. Notre Dame-Fairfield gets blanked by Morgan High School, 6-0, and are eliminated from the playoffs.

One is enough. Seymour gets a first-inning run and it holds up as they get past Oxford 1-0. Read more about the nail-biting Class S playoff game here.

State high school softball playoffs

Cards walk-off winners in playoffs. Rebecca DeCarlo hits a dramatic home run to lead Greenwich past Westhill. Read more about the dramatic walk-off victory here.

Mercy, mercy. Darien stomps all over Newington and they had to stop the game because it just got out of hand..

Stamford is done for the year after losing to Hand, 6-5, in the Class LL tournament.

Track

Mother Nature wins. Thunder took center stage at the Class LL track & field meet in Danbury and suspended the event. Here are the results through 11 events.
