You’d think that cyclists wouldn’t have to ask, but apparently some Tour de France fans need a refresher course on situational awareness.
Riders are asking fans to please, please stop leaning into courses to snap a selfie. In case it needs saying (and sadly it does), cyclists are traveling at high rates of speed and both cyclists and fans are being put in peril for the sake of a photo that will get three likes on Instagram.
“The worst thing is when people have got their backs to the peloton taking selfies,” British cyclist Geraint Thomas said in an interview. “They obviously don’t see us coming and they’ve stood in the road — which is dodgy. If you want to do that, just stand on a wall or something away from us.”
