You only have a month to catch Cuban jazz giant Chucho Valdes on his 22-concert tour of the United States. And, fortunately, one of those stops is at Fairfield University in Fairfield. The Grammy Award-winning musician will be performing and bringing along his Afro-Cuban Messengers to the Quick Center Saturday, Feb. 4.
Fans will likely hear music from the pianist’s latest album “Chucho’s Steps.” (You can watch the musicians talking about the work in the video above.) The show starts at 8 p.m.
But, as there is every weekend, there is plenty more music from which to choose. Andy Grammer comes to Ridgefield (where David Sanborn also will appear next week). The Christopher Robin Band stops in Fairfield. Adam Arcuragi and the Lupine Chorale Society visits New Haven. The Fairfield County Children’s Choir performs in Norwalk. There will be a “New York Invasion,” in Danbury. Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra celebrates Rodgers and Hammerstein, Fish Head Stew comes to Fairfield. Chris Botti is appearing in Hartford. And, harpist Deborah Henson-Conant comes to Newtown.
On stage, you can go see “Good Goods” in New Haven, the “Laramie Project” in Bridgeport, “One-Man Star Wars Trilogy,” in Fairfield, “Almost, Maine” in Westport, and “The Importance of Being Earnest” in Stamford. Dancer and choreographer Kyle Abraham, meanwhile, returns to his alma mater Purchase College with his award-winning show, “Radio Show.”
There are a couple of art events this weekend, too, including the opening of the Rex Prescott Walden show in Stamford; and the Aldrich hosts its First Fridays event tonight.
Families, and foodies, may want to make their way to Bedford Middle School in Westport where the fourth annual “Chowdafest” is set to take place. There also will be an Asian New Year Celebration at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo. In Greenwich, a Walter Wick-inspired search is set at the Bruce Museum. Stepping Stones Museum in Norwalk will be celebrating New Zealand. And, Western Connecticut State University will have a planetarium show at its observatory and planetarium.
And, of course, there is the Super Bowl on Sunday. Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing what Madonna will do with her half-time platform. And, maybe, I’ll catch a bit of football while I’m at it.
Until next time ….
