Stratford’s Tony Dovolani wins ‘Dancing with the Stars’

A Stratford dancer has leaped to victory in America’s hottest TV dance competition.

Tony Dovolani and his partner, Melissa Rycroft (right), took home the mirror ball trophy on the All-Star season of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” on Tuesday night, the team’s second try.

Dovolani, a professional ballroom dancer who co-owns Dance with Me in Stamford, had paired with Rycroft, once a finalist on “The Bachelor” and a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader in 2009, when they finished third.

This season, “Team Melissa” beat former Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson and her partner, Derek Hough, in the finale, doing the samba to the song “Life is a Highway.” Johnson and Hough were the favorites to to win, but a bad call on Derek’s part left the couple short points in the finals.

Dovolani owns Dance With Me with Petra Murgatroyd, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, who took the runner-up spot on Tuesday night’s show with his partner, Kelly Monaco. It is the fourth dance studio the three business partners have opened in the Tri-state area since 2005 (including locations in Ridgefield, New York City and Long Island).
