Brubeck birthday concert to go forward as tribute

A concert that had been planned to celebrate the 92nd birthday of jazz legend and longtime Wilton resident Dave Brubeck, who died Wednesday, will go on as scheduled Thursday at Waterbury’s Palace Theater.

Organizer Mike Gow said it will be a celebration of Brubeck’s life, according to the Associated Press.

Scheduled to perform are Brubeck’s son, Darius; Richie Cannata, a saxophone player for Billy Joel; and Bernie Williams, the former New York Yankees outfielder-turned-singer/songwriter.

The concert will benefit the charity Jazz’d 4 Life, founded by Brubeck’s daughter, Catherine Yaghsizian.

In a career that spanned almost all of American jazz since World War II, Brubeck achieved mainstream success with his exotic, classical-inspired rhythms that broke the boundaries of jazz.

In 1954, he became the first contemporary jazz musician to appear on the cover of Time magazine. Five years later, his group, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, scored a massive hit with “Time Out.”
