Out and about: Things to see and places to be this weekend

Speed is of the essence this weekend at Lime Rock Park where the running of the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix continues through Saturday. Get a close look at the cars and drivers (actor and race car driver Patrick Dempsey is expected to race) at the paddocks, get an autograph and enjoy the activities on the midway. The Pirelli World Challenge also is taking place, as well as the Lamborghini Super Trofeo. Meanwhile, the Danbury Fair Summer Nights Concert Series next Wednesday will feature Henry Haid’s Billy Joel Tribute.

Perhaps you will simply be racing around yourself, this weekend, trying to catch the music that will be offered throughout the state. Dave Mason will be in Westport on Saturday, which Vasudo will be playing up the road in Fairfield. Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Group comes to the Ridgefield Playhouse on Monday. Bernie Williams will open the Jazz Up July series in Stamford on Wednesday, with the help of some aspiring musicians. And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead will be in Hamden on Saturday.

In Stamford, you can catch the Galvanized Jazz Band on Sunday. The Holmes Brothers will be Ridgefield on Tuesday. Dixieland Jazz Band will perform in New London. Caramoor will host a salsa night later in the week.

There are a number of summer concert series under way this weekend, and upcoming week including those in Danbury, Ansonia, Derby, Fairfield, Hamden, Milford, Norwalk, Seymour, Shelton, Stratford, Trumbull and New Haven. The Yiddishkeit Klezmer Ensemble will be at the Jewish Community Center in Sherman on Saturday, while the Israeli Tzoflm Friendship Caravan Summer Concert takes place at the Stamford Jewish Community Center on Wednesday,

Spend a night at the bar from the comfort of your movie seat. The Avon Theatre in Stamford hosts a screening of “Hey Bartender,” on Wednesday. The Avon also has collaborated with the Stamford’s Mill River Collaborative to present “Spielberg at Sunset” features films either directed, written or produced by Steven Spielberg at the downtown park. “Gremlins,” initially set to air on July 2, will now be screened on Tuesday.

As it is summer, get ready to enjoy your share of festivals. The Barnum Museum and Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo will be celebrating a showman. The 27th annual New England Arts and Crafts Festival takes place in Milford. You can also head outdoors and hit the Connecticut Barn Trail, a new tourism initiative that adds to an already established network of trails.

Families may want to check out the opening of Fairy Tale Theater in Danbury, which will present “Winnie the Pooh.” “Alice in Wonderland” is playing in Danbury. “Pirates of the Hudson” continues through Sunday in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. Super Hero Day takes off at Playland on Saturday. Or, come to Stamford on Tuesday and have a wild time.

Libraries across the area have informative, educational and fun activities and programs abounding for all ages. Make sure to check out your local branch. Historical societies also have interesting events and exhibitions lined up for this weekend. You can take a walk around Fairfield and relive history. Or, visit the Rowayton Historical Society on Sunday and try to imagine a day at Roton Point Amusement Park.

On stage, “Rent” will be at the Brookfield Theater, “The Andrews Brothers” will be in Berlin. “9 to 5: The Musical” is at the Richter Arts Center.  And,  “Spamalot” wraps up its run in Sharon.
