VIDEO: Stamford native plays with Bruno Mars at Super Bowl

Bruno Mars gave a world-class performance at the Super Bowl halftime show last night, showing off his skills on the drums before tearing through four of his smash songs and collaborating with the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a surprisingly awesome rendition of “Give It Away.”

But none of that would have been possible without the support — and stellar dance moves — of Mars’ back-up band, which includes trumpeter James King, of Stamford.

King, a 29-year-old Westhill High School graduate, has been performing with Mars since the singer’s 2011 appearance on “American Idol.”

King said the Super Bowl half time concert represents “a huge leap forward” for Mars, the youngest musician ever to perform on the program.

“It’s like watching your good friend accomplishing his dreams,” King said. “It’s a great feeling to know that you’re a part of that success.”
